A LITTLE LOCAL GROWING KNOW-HOW

Help your Begonia feel at home.

Begonia Semperflorens-Cultorum Group

01 · Sun requirements

Find its light

Morning sun or bright filtered light; give relief from intense afternoon sun.

02 · Indoor / outdoor

Make room, indoors or out

Best as an outdoor bedding or container plant. A bright, protected space can shelter containers during cold weather.

03 · Soil & amendments

Start with good soil

Moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Blend mature compost through sandy beds and mulch lightly. In pots, use potting mix with bark or perlite for air and drainage.

04 · Water requirements

Water with care

Water the root ball thoroughly during establishment and recheck soil moisture before watering again. Once rooted, water during dry stretches as the upper soil begins to dry; reduce during cool or rainy weather.

05 · Growing habit

Give it room to grow

Compact, mounding wax begonia; common bedding selections stay roughly 6–12 in tall and wide, while larger hybrids differ.

06 · Zones & cold protection

Know your growing zone

Can be grown in zones 9b–11, but frost may burn foliage or cause dieback. Shelter containers and young plants during freezing weather.

Supplier identifies wax/semperflorens begonias. Keep leaves and crowns airy, and avoid a permanently soggy root zone.

Growing notes & sources · reviewed 2026-10-06

Plant size, moisture needs and cold tolerance vary with cultivar, exposure and establishment. Check the root zone before watering; nursery pot size is not mature plant size.
