A LITTLE LOCAL GROWING KNOW-HOW

Help your Caribbean Agave feel at home.

Agave angustifolia

01 · Sun requirements

Find its light

Full sun, at least 6 hours of direct light.

02 · Indoor / outdoor

Make room, indoors or out

Best outdoors in a landscape bed or a suitably large container; not a typical indoor houseplant.

03 · Soil & amendments

Start with good soil

Excellent drainage is essential. Use a raised, freely draining site or cactus/succulent potting mix with mineral grit or pumice. Avoid manure-rich amendments and water-holding planting pockets.

04 · Water requirements

Water with care

Soak thoroughly, let excess water drain, then allow the mix to dry before watering again. Established ground plants need little supplemental water. Keep much drier during cool, wet weather.

05 · Growing habit

Give it room to grow

Spiny rosettes around 2–4 ft tall and wide for the supplied selection; offsets form a colony and the flower stalk rises much higher.

06 · Zones & cold protection

Know your growing zone

Can be grown in zones 9b–11, but frost may burn foliage or cause dieback. Shelter containers and young plants during freezing weather.

Keep sharp leaf tips away from seating and paths; remove unwanted offsets and protect from frost.

Growing notes & sources · reviewed 2026-10-06

Plant size, moisture needs and cold tolerance vary with cultivar, exposure and establishment. Check the root zone before watering; nursery pot size is not mature plant size.

USDA zones describe average annual extreme winter lows, not indoor light, summer heat, salt exposure or drainage. 9b: 25–30°F; 10a: 30–35°F; 10b: 35–40°F; 11a: 40–45°F; 11b: 45–50°F. About USDA zones ↗
