A LITTLE LOCAL GROWING KNOW-HOW

Help your Orchid Tree feel at home.

Bauhinia × blakeana

01 · Sun requirements

Find its light

Full sun, at least 6 hours of direct light.

02 · Indoor / outdoor

Make room, indoors or out

An outdoor landscape specimen. Plan for mature root and canopy space; it will outgrow a small balcony pot.

03 · Soil & amendments

Start with good soil

Choose a site with adequate rooting room and drainage. Backfill with the existing soil; use surface mulch kept away from the trunk. Base any fertilizer or pH amendment on a soil test.

04 · Water requirements

Water with care

Water the root ball thoroughly during establishment and recheck soil moisture before watering again. Once rooted, water during dry stretches as the upper soil begins to dry; reduce during cool or rainy weather.

05 · Growing habit

Give it room to grow

Fast-growing, spreading, partly deciduous Hong Kong orchid tree, roughly 12–20 ft tall and 20–25 ft wide. Train strong branches while young.

06 · Zones & cold protection

Know your growing zone

Can be grown in zones 9b–11, but frost may burn foliage or cause dieback. Shelter containers and young plants during freezing weather.

The current supplier identifies Bauhinia × blakeana. Confirm this sterile hybrid on the nursery label; other orchid trees have different seed-spread behavior.

Growing notes & sources · reviewed 2026-10-06

Plant size, moisture needs and cold tolerance vary with cultivar, exposure and establishment. Check the root zone before watering; nursery pot size is not mature plant size.

USDA zones describe average annual extreme winter lows, not indoor light, summer heat, salt exposure or drainage. 9b: 25–30°F; 10a: 30–35°F; 10b: 35–40°F; 11a: 40–45°F; 11b: 45–50°F. About USDA zones ↗
